State of the Universe Address 2013

State of the Universe Address 2013

Greetings Entropians,

While 2012 was an important and eventful year for Entropia Universe, the upcoming year promises to bring even greater opportunities for development of the EU platform and participant growth.

One very exciting milestone that will be reached early in 2013 is Entropia’s ten-year anniversary! The official “gold” version of Project Entropia (the predecessor to Entropia Universe) was released on Jan. 30, 2003, and MindArk will be celebrating the anniversary throughout 2013 with numerous special events and promotions. More details can be found in the 2013 Roadmap section below.

The MindArk team has spent much of December pinpointing the highest priorities and plotting our development roadmap for 2013. Some amazing improvements are coming very soon, and I am confident in stating that the future of Entropia Universe looks brighter than ever!

Before detailing MindArk’s development plans for the new year, I’d like to quickly share the highlights and progress achieved in 2012.

2012 HIGHLIGHTS

New Participant Experience
As mentioned in the State of the Universe Address 2012, MindArk made a conscious effort in 2012 to improve the overall Entropia Universe user experience, especially for newcomers. Towards that goal, MindArk and the planet partners put a lot of focus on refining the systems and content encountered by new participants during their first few hours in Entropia Universe. These improvements included revamping the Genesis new arrivals area to improve performance and ease the learning curve for newbies. In response to feedback from the community, creature loots were also adjusted by MindArk to dramatically reduce the incidence of ‘No Looters’. On the planet partner side of things, newly designed beginner areas were introduced on Planet Arkadia and Planet Calypso, with the goal of better educating and engaging new participants and helping them gain some early momentum in their Entropia Universe careers.

Marketing
In conjunction with the the improvements to new participant areas described above, MindArk gradually ramped up its marketing efforts during 2012, resulting in a 50% increase in the number of unique visitors to the EntropiaUniverse.com and planet partner websites. In addition, the redesign and optimization of the Planet Calypso website completed in early autumn helped to significantly improve the conversion rate of website visitors. The results of these marketing efforts are very encouraging indeed. Entropia Universe now has 2.5 times more new active accounts compared to 2011, and overall activity in the universe is increasing steadily. Without doubt, MindArk plans to build on this success by refining and expanding its marketing efforts during 2013, first by increasing the current Google banner campaigns, and later branching out to additional advertising networks. Finally, an exciting new Entropia Universe promotional video is being developed in conjunction with Arkadia Studios, to be released early in the new year.

Systems Development
While there certainly was a big focus on the new player experience in 2012, there were also tons of other enhancements and improvements introduced for existing participants, many of which were given priority based on feedback received through support cases and on community forums. Some of the highlights of those improvements include:

  • New and improved crafting interface
  • Instance system - major improvements and expansion (beacons/dungeons)
  • Improved creature loot balancing
  • Mission system enhancements & rebalancing
  • Mindforce improvements and new effects
  • Dozens of critical bugfixes and user interface optimizations

Platform Development
MindArk’s development team spent a large part of the second half of 2012 building the foundations to allow other types of client software to connect to Entropia Universe. The first of those new clients, Virtual Tycoon, was released in December and allows participants to connect to Entropia Universe through their Android powered smartphone. An iOS version Virtual Tycoon compatible with iPhone and iPad will be released in the very near future. More information about Virtual Tycoon can be found in this announcement. The effort invested in this project will pay future dividends as well, as it allows for much faster development to make Entropia Universe available on other client platforms such as tablets, additional mobile devices, along with various web-based interfaces.

Avatar Development
Another project that has kept the MindArk team quite busy in the latter half of 2012 focuses on improving avatar appearance and the avatar creation interface. Originally planned for release at the end of 2012, completion of this project has required somewhat more time than expected, and is now scheduled to be implemented early in 2013. The good news is that this allows MindArk and the planet partners to put the finishing touches of the new system, so your avatars will be looking better than ever!

2013 ROADMAP

Entropia’s 10 Year Anniversary
As mentioned earlier, Entropia will turn 10 years old on January 30, 2013, and MindArk will celebrate this historic milestone with some wonderful universe-wide events beginning on the anniversary date and continuing throughout 2013. As a token of thanks for the support we have received from our amazing community over the years, special anniversary edition items will be introduced in loots and offered as event prizes. These items will have enhanced stats and can be identified by the TEN suffix in the item name (Tenth Entropia New year).

Also in celebration of ten years of Entropia, there will be a major estate announced for auction at the end of January, with a completely new management/revenue model. More details will be released as the anniversary date approaches.

Veteran Appreciation
As another show of thanks, MindArk will focus lots of development time on improving the Entropia Universe experience for current participants and Entropia veterans. Many of the most common requests and wishlist items received from our participants via support cases and community forums will be addressed in the first two version updates of the new year. Issues that will be prioritized include:

  • Fixing bugs
  • Reducing cost to play / increasing average TT returns
  • Lowering the volatility of returns for many activities
  • Increasing UL item tiering speed / lowering UL item tiering cost
  • Removing the UL armor equipping fee
  • Lowering the minimum usable condition of many items

Many other interface improvements and game system upgrades are also planned for the second quarter of 2013 and beyond, including items such as PVP combat, mission system functionality, vehicle system, removing exploits, expanding crafting, interface enhancements, bug fixing, and much more.

Infrastructure Upgrades
Major upgrades will be performed on the Entropia Universe platform infrastructure beginning in January. These upgrades will result in improved server stability and faster development and deployment times for future version updates. While these upgrades will require a few months for full completion, participants can expect better performance, fewer unexpected server outages, and much shorter VU downtimes.

In addition, refinements to the development and release procedures for MindArk and its planet partners will help improve client stability, reduce bugs and other unexpected system behavior, and generally improve the overall Entropia Universe experience.

Taming
Many of our more patient participants will be happy to hear that a completely redesigned taming system will be developed in 2013. The new taming system will include many of the features from the pre-CryEngine system, along with many new and exciting features that will expand the utility of tamed creatures. Additionally, one of the upcoming new Entropia Universe planets will make extensive use of the new taming system as a core aspect of the planet’s theme.

Financial
Several new payment provider solutions will be introduced early in 2013, including Paypal and Paypal’s mobile payment service, Zong. MindArk is also researching opportunities for supplemental credit card processing solutions, in light of the recent disuprtions and issues experienced with DIBS.

New starter packs will soon be offered on the Entropia Universe and planet partner websites. These packs are designed to provide new participants with a full range of appropriate starter gear at a reasonable cost, and help them start their Entropia Universe careers off on the right foot.

CLD Estate & Political Systems
Concept design of the Calypso Land Deed estate and political systems is already in full swing. While many of the core concepts are already in place, we believe it would be worthwhile to gain valuable feedback from the community on several proposed aspects of these new systems. Therefore, we will be contacting CLD holders with a survey early in the year to get their input. Once the design plans are finalized, actual development of the estate and political systems is scheduled to begin after the summer. We are very excited about the potential of the political system especially, and look forward to working together with the community to make it something truly amazing and unique in the computer game industry.

All in all, we leave behind a fruitful 2012 and set our sights forward to some very promising opportunities available to continue expanding and improving Entropia Universe in 2013. We sincerely hope that you join us in celebrating ten years of Entropia early next year, and in developing the future of virtual reality in 2013 and beyond.

Warmest holiday regards from all of us at MindArk,

David Simmonds

Hunting Kerberos S2 Merry Mayhem 2012 Solo with EWE LC-120 Purpose (L)

This year MindArk changed how Merry Mayhem works. Until now everyone was hunting at the open world and it was possible to interact with other participants now you enter instances where you hunt alone if you enter solo instance or you are only with your team if you enter team instance. Some people didn't like the change, but most are happy that now everyone has a chance to participate solo, not like in the past years where you needed team and a lot of work to form it and coordinate it.

To start the mission you must go to Port Atlantis and talk to Carl Tucker (61421; 75105). He will give you 30 keys for solo instances and 30 keys for team instances. Each key give you 1 hour to hunt in that instance. So you can do 30 hours hunting solo and 30 hours hunting in team. The event started on 14 of December 2012 and will end 30 of January 2013 which gives plenty of time to do it.

There are 4 categories for the event. In what category you are depends on your highest hunting profession:
Category 1: Highest Professional Standing 0-24
Category 2: Highest Professional standing 25-49
Category 3: Highest Professional standing 50-69
Category 4: Highest Professional Standing 70 or higher.

I am Laser Sniper (Hit): 33 and Ranged Laser (Dmg): 31 so I am in category 2. Looks like I don't have much chance to compete with players level 45-49, but I decide to do it for the fin. The price of weapons looks pretty high at the moment, but I buy EWE LC-120 Purpose (L). The MU was like 137% yesterday but 125% today.

I get in the instance, but few L21 Merry Mayhem Araneatrox (S,2) spawn around me and I die fast. I quickly decide that they are too strong for me and I start hunting the weaker L11 Merry Mayhem Kerberos (S,2). And I am not even thinking of getting close to the boss mob L38 Yulebot (S,2). I just take quick picture with him. In the end I was lucky enough to get a global and finish the first run on profit. For that run I made just 141 points for 141 killed Kerberos.

2013 Roadmap for Entropia Universe

Next week MindArk CEO David Simmonds will post major Entropia Buzz article and email newsletter which will feature a 2012 Report and 2013 Roadmap. Keep an eye on this blog if you don't want to miss the good (or bad) newses (or how it is the plurar of news:)

Merry Mayhem Update 2

It appears that one of the 30 creatures were forgotten by MA when the IDs were changed from T1 to T3. They won't be able to fix this before the event is over however it shouldn't affect the outcome too much since everyone who runs the instance have identical spawns.
This means that you will see some T1 Kerbs in the T3 team zones.

Merry Mayhem Update

A very small number of participants in the Merry Mayhem event were affected by the unexpected server maintenance early this morning. We apologize for this inconvenience, and will ensure that ample warnings will be provided for any future maintenance or downtime during the event.

In cases like this one which affect multiple event participants, MindArk and the Planet Calypso teams will investigate and adjust the final event scores for affected participants accordingly for the time lost, based on the average score per hour achieved during the remainder of the event.

Those participants affected today should submit a support case with as much information as possible about the interrupted instance, including: full avatar name, event category, time when the instance was started, and any other relevant information that will help in verifying the claim.

In order to qualify for a score adjustment under this policy, a participant must complete all other instances which were unaffected by issues related to the Entropia Universe server or instance uptime. If a participant has unused event instance keys at the end of the event, that participant’s score will not be adjusted.

Note that claims for event score adjustments will only be granted for issues that affect multiple participants, and which are caused by general server issues or outages from MindArk’s side. Individual client connection issues (user ISP outages, computer crashes, etc.) are not covered under this policy, and will not be reimbursed. Please do not submit support cases for such issues, as they cannot be honored and scores will not be adjusted, nor will replacement instance keys be issued.

This policy aims to make the event as fair as possible for everyone involved, while minimizing the impact and frustration for those affected by unexpected or unforeseeable server issues.

Best of luck in Merry Mayhem!

Mister and Miss Calypso 2013 Information

Mister & Miss Calypso 2013 will be held sometime in late JANUARY 2013. It's not sure if the CALYPSO TEAM will sponsor the event. Or at least this is what avatar True TJ Juan is trying to organize.

Buy and sell in-game items with cash on Steam

Steam opens market for players to buy and sell in-game items with cash.

Valve has unveiled a new section of Steam that provides a place for players to sell in-game items to others using real currency. The Steam Community Market has launched in beta with support for Team Fortress 2, but will host more games in the new year. Players can use Steam Wallet funds to buy items like keys or crates; the former unlocks the latter, which contain mystery items. The implications go far beyond enhancing your Team Fortress 2 performance, however — essentially, you can now buy games with money earned from playing other games.

Steam will charge a 5 percent transaction fee on all purchases, and there are also chargeable fees specific to the game that the publisher sets: in Team Fortress 2's case, this fee is 10 percent, meaning that Valve will take a total of 15 percent of all transactions. While the beta is limited in scope so far, the impact on Steam's economy down the road could be huge.

Entropia Universe 12.10.1 Release Notes

Changes

  • The Safe Arrival grace time you receive when teleporting has been removed from the Land Grab and Fort events.
  • Increased the grace period between land grabs to 30-45 days, the change will take effect as soon as a land area has been claimed after the update has gone live.

Planet Arkadia 2012.7.1 Patch Release Notes

The Arkadian Colonial Administration (ACA) recently conducted a vehicle congestion review across Sentosa. As a result, vehicle use is no longer permitted in Celeste Quarry. These restrictions are currently in a testing phase, and are open to further tweaks as the ACA conducts further research and gauges colonist feedback.

When the ACA is satisfied that the boundary dimensions are adequate, they will be approved. Signs will then be installed at the edges of the boundary to remind drivers to exit their vehicle.

Fixes

  • Carabok and Gallard spawns near Celeste Quarry have been adjusted in response to colonist feedback on new vegetation density. The ACA hopes there is now something for everyone to enjoy, and encourages further colonist discussion of the matter at Arkadia Forum.
  • The collision box of the Gallard has been amended to allow colonists to get a little closer.
  • Riptor collision box has been adjusted so that they don't push colonists around as much.
  • Shagadi Disintegration Sword has had the spelling of its name corrected.

Known Issues

  • The Golden Door under Aakas is currently unstable, causing the server to crash. Crashing servers being a serious health hazard, the door remains non-interactive.
  • Gangnam style appears to have lasted until the year 3009.

2012 MERRY MAYHEM RULES & INFO

It’s time once again for Planet Calypso’s annual winter hunting extravaganza - Merry Mayhem! This year’s event features an expanded prize pool with new prizes - including valuable Calypso Land Deeds - new creatures, and updated rules. Running for 23 days over the Christmas holiday, Merry Mayhem is among the most exciting and popular events in all of Entropia Universe. So grab your best gear and join in the Mayhem!

Event Dates
  • Dec 14: Competition opens at 00:00 UTC.
  • Jan 06: Competition ends 23:59 UTC.
  • Jan 18: Competition winners will be announced.
  • Jan 30: The missions can be turned in to Carl Tucker.

Registration - You can register for the event by accepting either one or both Merry Mayhem missions offered by the NPC Carl Tucker, located near the Port Atlantis marina at the following map coordinates: 61421 x 75105, Eudoria. Registration opens on December 14 and will remain open until the event is finished. Note that there are two separate missions: one mission for the solo event and one mission for the team event.

Do not abandon the Merry Mayhem missions! If you do abandon a Merry Mayhem mission, all event points accumulated up to that time will be lost and will be unable to be replaced.

Categories - The event offers several different competition categories to accommodate players of varying profession levels. Players will be sorted into one of the following four categories upon accepting the Mayhem missions.
  • Category 1: Highest Professional Standing 0-24
  • Category 2: Highest Professional standing 25-49
  • Category 3: Highest Professional standing 50-69
  • Category 4: Highest Professional Standing 70 or higher

Important Note - If during the course of the event you gain enough skills to move into the next category, you will no longer be able to enter the team instance arenas using your old keys (solo participants will not be affected). To continue participating or assisting in a team instance in such a case, you will need to chip out enough combat skills to bring your highest profession level below the effective category criteria.

Participation - When you accept the solo Mayhem mission, you will automatically be placed in the appropriate category and you will receive a stack of keys, each of which entitles you to one hour of gameplay in one of the solo Merry Mayhem instances. The portals to the Merry Mayhem instances are located in Twin Peaks, just to the left of the main Service Center. You will receive 30 keys for the solo event and they will be flagged with your particular category.

If you wish to also participate in one of the team categories or assist someone else there, you will need to register for the team Mayhem mission, also available from the NPC Carl Tucker. While the solo keys only allow you to enter the solo instance specified in the key's name, the team keys allow you to access team instances of a level equal to that which your were assigned, along with all higher levels. Points toward the mission are gained by killing the special Merry Mayhem creatures found inside the instances. The Merry Mayhem prizes will be distributed based on the scoring ranks once the event is completed. Make sure to plan and spend your 30 instance hours wisely!

Important Note - Do not leave an instance once the 60 minute timer has started, or you may risk having problems reentering the instance, and risk losing hunting time in the Merry Mayhem event.

Mayhem Creatures
The Mayhem creatures assigned to each category are:
  • Category 1 Team: Merry Mayhem Kerberos (T,1), Merry Mayhem Araneatrox (T,1)
  • Category 2 Team: Merry Mayhem Kerberos (T,2), Merry Mayhem Araneatrox (T,2)

Entropia Universe Android App Released

MindArk is very excited to announce that Virtual Tycoon, the very first Entropia Universe mobile application, has been released on the Google Play app store today.

Virtual Tycoon gives players full access to the Construction system, the Auction system, Storage, Accounting, Avatar Skills and Professions, and Hall of Fame information. One of the most exciting features is the ability to craft and auction items from your Android mobile device. With full access to storage and all the details of the items contained therein, colonists always know what they have to sell and what they need. This amazing overview includes all blueprints, and even has a helpful sorting functionality to assist players in finding the blueprints most suitable to craft at the moment.

"We are in a world where people are constantly on the go and they always have mobile devices with them," said David Simmonds, CEO of MindArk. “Since Entropia Universe is non-stop as well, players need access to their characters and accounts whenever and wherever. In short, this is the first step in making the Entropia Universe experience available when away from the computer.”

To download Virtual Tycoon directly, visit the Google Play App store on your Android mobile device at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mindark.eu.virtualtycoon

The Apple iOS version of Virtual Tycoon will also be released very soon, stay tuned!

Planet Arkadia Update 2012.7 (4th December 2012)

Rebalancing

The team at Arkadia Studios has been working hard on major new content for next year's first update. We can't talk too much about it for now, but let's just say we're quietly excited!

Today's update, however, is focused primarily on rebalancing and bugfixing. Changes are as follows:

Creature Stats

As mentioned in the Entropia Universe 12.10 Release Notes, universe-wide change to balancing requirements for creatures has resulted in the need for review of all creature statistics. In most cases, our creatures were already well-balanced, however the following creatures had changes made:

Scoria
Kadra
Riptor
Nusul
Magurg Female
Oratan Lancer
Aakas Defender, Aakas Paladin, Aakas Sentinel, Aakas Warden
Dehera Attacker, Dehera Brute, Dehera Charger, Dehera Destroyer, Dehera Exterminator, Dehera Furion, Dehera Giant, Dehera Hero, Dehera Infuriator, Dehera Juggernaut

Weapon Stats

A universe-wide change to balancing requirements for weapons has resulted in the need for review of the Herman Industries weapon range. In our cases, this includes the entire ASI, ARK, CAP and LAW pistol and rifle series.

The requirement was that the whole range of weapons needed to have Skill Increase Bonus (SIB) figures adjusted in order for the rest of the statistics to remain the same. As a result, in general the SIB levels have increased for these weapons.

We understand that for those colonists who own such weapons (and the relevant Blueprints), this means a higher skill requirement to continue to be able to use the weapon. We realise this is an inconvenience and we apologise.

On the other hand, we took the decision to make this change, because it now appears to mean the weapon availability will improve. We hope this will be particularly noticeable at the higher ends of the ASI, ARK, CAP and LAW weapon series.

We are aware also that these changes open up SIB level gaps between the various weapons. This of course is an unintended consequence, and we are already looking at the possibility of new ranges of weapons in future, in order to fill these gaps.

Please understand that we are doing our best to look after you, our colonists, and we believe this change to be in the best long term interest of your community.

Fixes and Improvements

In the first of many future terrain updates, the area around Celeste Quarry has had some terrain changes. We encourage you to take your Hoverpod for a drive, so you can see what the future of Arkadian terraforming and landscaping holds.
A new Gallard spawn has been added to the north-east of Celeste Quarry. This is easily reached by following the tunnel through the hill from the Quarry, the entrance for which is at 31254, 9598.
Terrain and path updates have also been made around the Nusul Spawn area, primarily beginning from Celeste Outpost at 27267, 10933, and up through the hills to the north-west, all the way to a new entrance of Fearless Firebase Academy at 25047, 15354.
The ACA Representative's missions have been adjusted so that it should now be possible to complete all missions.
All ten existing instances under the ancient city of Aakas should now be operating correctly. It should now be possible to exit the instance directly after looting the Treasure Chests.

Known Issues

Gallard's collision box is the wrong size, and has already been adjusted. This change will come through with the upcoming patch, expected next week.
The instance behind the Arkadian Golden Door is still causing the server to crash. We are hopeful to have this rectified by the next update.
Arkoin Brokers are still not operational. At this stage we are unsure of a time for the fix, however we are hopeful of having it for our first update of 2013.

Entropia Universe 12.10 Release Notes

New Features

  • Multi-select feature - It is now possible to select and move multiple items at once within many user interfaces, including: storage, inventory, Repair Terminal, Trade Terminal and containers. Other user interfaces, such as shopkeepers and blueprint books, now support multi-select when moving items from them, but not into them.
  • Official avatars now display a star icon above their heads to be easier to recognize.

Changes & Improvements

  • The alerts displayed when approaching and entering Lootable PvP areas have been improved.
  • Vehicles - Some vehicles now deteriorate when driven, this information is displayed in the vehicle’s item info panel. When a vehicle reaches minimum condition, the driver and all passengers will be ejected from the vehicle. These deterioration changes have been applied thus far to rookie, gift and other specialty vehicles, in order to ensure that Limited vehicles are indeed Limited and do not last indefinitely.
  • Many creatures on the Entropia Universe platform have been adjusted in order to improve balancing. Various parameters have been adjusted on these creatures to achieve a better balance between threat level and the actual danger and cost to kill. These adjustments have mainly affected creatures with high health and relatively low damage. Please see the individual Planet Partner release notes or forums for more detailed information on which creatures have been affected on each planet.
Bug fixes

  • Fixed an issue with some creatures beginning to slide before the death animation was triggered.
  • To clarify the Auction fee reduction; this has been working correctly since 12.9.1.
